“How can I choose a toy that is good for a boy versus a toy that is suitable for a girl?”

Let’s be clear. Forget about gender!

Children are born with a need to explore and a desire to learn more. Forget the idea that some toys are for boys and others are for girls, and choose a toy they like, regardless of their gender.

Yes, we recognise that as they grow up, some children naturally lean towards boys’ or girls’ toys, but while they are little, let’s let them explore and not hold back their learning by saying that something is for girls or for boys.

All toys are for having fun!

Does my son like playing with dolls?

Perfect!

All children need to begin to understand social situations, and if educational dolls help him express himself, share his thoughts and learn about social dynamics, dolls are perfect for this.

Does your daughter like playing with trucks in the mud?

Wonderful!

All girls need to develop a sense of belonging. By playing with trucks she is finding her place in this world, showing interest in others, and by getting dirty in the mud she is engaging in more sensory experiences than she would indoors.

Does your child enjoy rough-and-tumble play?

Does your child enjoy building games?

Fantastic!

This type of play teaches children about boundaries and socially acceptable behaviour, and helps keep them physically fit.

What we are trying to say is that any kind of play is good. Children learn through play, no matter the toy and no matter their gender. So let’s try to stop putting these restrictive “girls” or “boys” labels on toys and just let children have fun.
